It is recommended that a woman have their first Gynecologic exam at the age of 12, or when they become sexually active and have questions about contraception and STD’s.
Women aged 40 and older should have a mammogram every 1 to 2 years. Women with increased risk of breast cancer due to the things such as family history are advised to talk with their physician about whether to have mammograms before the age of 40. At the age of 50 and beyond mammograms are still recommended annually. For women with dense breast tissue supplemental ultrasounds are often employed.
Women who miss a period but find their pregnancy test result to be negative should cautiously monitor the situation, as sometimes something as simple as an increase in stress, travel, and illness can cause a woman to miss her period. However, if the same thing happens during the next cycle, you should contact your physician to schedule an appointment.
Breast Cancer Check
The majority of lumps found in a woman’s breasts are not ALL related to breast cancer. However, Women who have found a lump in one of their breasts should contact their physician IMMEDIATELY to schedule an appointment for an evaluation.
Women of reproductive age can have changes in the breast related to hormonal events that occur during their menstrual cycle. Conducting Breast Self Exams (BSE) regularly can help to identify when a lump might feel abnormal. If an abnormal lump is found a woman should contact their physician to schedule an appointment.
